I. FAQ'S – PRINTER SET UP

Q. How do I Connect the Printer to my Computer?

A. Connect the printer to either the USB port or parallel port of the computer. Initialize the printer communications port by sending data to either the parallel or USB port. To change from the USB port to the parallel port or vice versa the printer must be reinitialized or manually changed through the Setup Menu. Doing otherwise may affect the operation and performance of the printer. To connect the printer to the computer:

  1. Align male end of parallel cable or USB cable connector. Push the cable connector in.
  2. Secure the cable. Use the 2 wire clips to snap into the tabs on the connector. Use the thumb screws on the parallel connector to screw into the hex jack screws on the electrical bracket.
  3. Align the other end of the cable to the connector on the computer and push into the port.
  4. Secure the cable in place. Use the thumb screws on the connector to screw into the hex jack screws on the computer.
Q.How Do I install an Ink Jet Cartridge?

A. The 22K uses up to 3 black, C8842A cartridges. To install a cartridge verify the LED above the On Line button is lit. The LED is either unlit for Off Line or lit for On Line. Do the following:

  1. Remove top cover.
  2. Remove cartridge from the shipping container. Be careful not to touch the copper ribbon.
  3. Remove both pieces of tape covering the ink nozzles on the print cartridge. Be careful not to touch the copper ribbon.
  4. Raise the latch all the way up on the Head Print Assembly. Hold cartridge from the notched handle on top of the cartridge. Gently insert cartridge down at 45 degree angle into the cradle.
  5. Push down on the ink cartridge until it is seated on the bottom of the Head Print Assembly. Push and rock the ink cartridge forward to stand ink cartridge up. Press down blue latch to lock ink cartridge in place. Remember: When the ink indicator shows 5% or lower the Print Cartridges are nearly empty and have to be changed soon.
Q. Do I Need to Prepare the Media Before Running My Job?

A. To assist the media and have your job run smoothly, it is recommended the media be prepared for the printer. Use the following steps:

  1. Take a pile of media and fan all sides of the media to make sure each piece is free from one another.
  2. Square (tap) the pile against the table top, assuring a square pile on all sides. This allows media to settle toward the bottom of a stuffed envelope and will increase the feeding capabilities of the printer.
Q.What Types of Media Can I Use?

A. The printer is designed to feed and print on a variety of media with various finishes and coatings. The sharpness of the print quality will vary with different media types, depending on how absorbent the media is, as well as other qualities. The best results can be achieved using white wove bonded stock. The printing quality will be less sharp on tyvek, recycled and glossy media.

Acceptable media:Envelopes (these should be stacked to feed with the bottom edge-non flap edge against the registration wall of the Rear Chassis Assembly), Booklets (these should be stacked with the sealed edge leading or stacked with the sealed edge placed parallel to the registration wall of the rear chassis assembly), Catalogs (should be stacked with the sealed edge leading or stacked with the sealed edge placed parallel to the registration wall of the rear chassis assemply), Postcards (must be 3.5” x 5” or larger), Self Mailers (C or Z folded, and tabbed and within allowable thickness), Paper (16 to 80 lb.). Note: Check on postal guidelines for tabbing folded material and catalogs.

Acceptable paper types: white wove, bond, recycled, coated, card stock, brown kraft, manila.

Q. How Do I Set the Proper Feed Gap and Load Media?

A. To start a print job, the feed gap should be set for each type of media used in the printer. The feed gap is the spacing between the feed rollers and the separators. Set the feed gap with a piece of media by following these procedures:

  1. Loosen the H-Block Knob on the three H-Block Assemblies.
  2. Raise the three H-Block Assemblies up. Tighten the H-Block Knobs to secure H-Block Assemblies in place.
  3. Take a piece of media and place between the Feed Rollers and the H-Block Assemblies.
  4. Square the edge of the media against the wall of the Rear Support Plate Assembly.
  5. Loosen the H-Block Knobs and allow the H-Block Assemblies to drop on the top of the media. Keep the H-Block Assemblies up that won't contact the media. When just one of the separator fingers is in contact with the media use another piece beneath the other separator finger and the Feed Roller to set the feed gap.
  6. Tighten H-Block Knobs to secure H-Block Assemblies in this position.
When the feed gap is not set correctly the printer will have feeding problems. When the gap is too wide double feeding (feeding two or more pieces at a time) will occur. If the gap is too small the media will jam beneath the separators.

The input bin can now be filled with media for printing. Envelopes should be “shingled” or layered with the piece on top partially covering the piece below it like shingles on a roof. Load into the input bin with flap away from the feed roller and facing downward. Start with just a few envelopes to start the stack and get the angled contour of the bin area, then add several more pieces. Then add the remainder of the stack.

For postcards (.003” thickness) – set a smaller gap between the H-Block Assemblies and the Feed Rollers. Try using a sheet of copy paper to set the feed gap.

For stuffed media – set a larger gap between the separator blocks and the feed roller. Try adding two or three, #10 envelopes, on top of the media before setting the separators.

Q. How Do I Set the Right Height Adjustment for Media Thickness?

A. Different sizes and types of media call for unique settings for the Print Head Holder Assembly. The envelope thickness knob increases or decreases the distance of the ink jet cartridge from the media. This gives the printer the ability to adapt to different types of media. Proper use of the knob results in clean crisp print. Use the following steps as a general guideline to get the best quality possible for most types of media:

  1. Load the media you want to use.
  2. Turn the knob clockwise to raise the print cartridge to the highest position.
  3. Press the test button down so the printer feed and prints a test piece.
  4. If the print is hazy or light, lower the print cartridge by turning knob counterclockwise. Keep lowering the bank of print cartridges and pressing the test button until the best quality is found. If the print looks smudged, raise the cartridge back up slightly.
  5. The final step is the adjust and locate the bank over the media where the graphics or text is going to be sprayed.
Q. How do I Synchronize the Print Cartridges?

A. The bank of three print cartridges has to be synchronized to print graphics, scaleable fonts or to justify the left edge of print. If the print cartridges are not synchronized anything that requires two or three print cartridges to line up a left edge or to print next to each other may print to the left of one another or on top of each other. When installing a new print cartridge or cartridges into the print head assembly it may be necessary to realign it with the other print cartridges. Synchronizing the print cartridges in the print head assemblies is accomplished using the service menu option adjust print. Print cartridges can be adjusted both vertically and horizontally.

Q. How Do I Set Up The Printer For My Job?

A. Use the main menu to choose the format and style of address, print quality, font, barcode and for additional information to assist in production. Selected menu options from a sub-menu will appear first in the list of options. Note: The printer driver overrides most control panel settings in the printer. Some of the control panel settings are also configured in the printer driver.

II. FAQ'S - PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE
The 22K printer is designed for trouble free service with a minimal amount of care. Periodic cleaning of the sensor, floor and print head assembly will be necessary to keep the machine running at peak performance.

Q.How Do I Clean the Entry and Exit Idler Rollers?

A. From normal operations the rollers will have a buildup of ink, wax, etc. and will require removal or they will leave marks on the media. Use water to dampen a soft cotton cloth to remove the ink from the rollers and also the printer floor. Raise the print head assembly up and out of the way to clean the printer floor.

Q. When Should I Clean or Replace the Ink Cartridge?

A. If the print quality is unacceptable select the Purge Print Head function from the Setup Menu. If the problems still persist do the following:

  1. Remove the Ink Jet Cartridge. Clean the nozzles with a soft lint-free cotton cloth. Use a dry cloth or one moistened with water to clean the ink jet cartridge.
  2. Remove problem ink jet cartridge and install a new one.
Q.What Could Be the Cause of Misfeeds?

A. With use, a film and/or dust builds up on the sensors causing misfeeds of media. Lift the front door and use compressed air to blow dust from the sensors
